Literacy Action
Literacy Action had been fighting illiteracy in Georgia for 45 years when Scott began working with them. The organization was perceived as essential by the community and supportive of its students but was suffering from a perceived lack of strong leadership; a somewhat shrinking presence within the community; and an out-of-date visual identity. A page began to turn for Literacy Action with the arrival of a new President and Executive Director. Timing was ripe to take advantage of this new found energy and develop a visual identity.
By obtaining an education the adult student can rise above their station, lend a hand to family and friends, and turn an impoverished community into an economic success story. An adult education is transformative, empowering, and liberating for the student who once found it impossible to fill out a job application. These three powerful incentives, and the idea of ascending, influenced the direction for the logotype. In addition, memories and art are replete with the image of "steps" ranging from our own experiences with grade school to the gathering of scholars in Raphael’s The School of Athens.
